TRANSITION TO EMPLOYMENT SERVICES – VIRTUAL INFORMATION SESSION

Virtual Job Hub Focuses on Social/Community/Education Positions

Job seekers in Grande Prairie and area interested in working in the social/community/education sectors can gain a wealth of information about employment in these areas from local organizations by tuning into a free Virtual Job Hub.

Another Resource for Job Seekers

The Work Place has added another resource to its toolkit of services for unemployed and underemployed individuals in Grande Prairie and area.

We’re now one of two locations in Alberta – and four in Western Canada – to join Northstar Digital Literacy, developed in response to the needs of job seekers who may lack the digital literacy skills required to seek, obtain, and retain employment.

Communication and accessing information is increasingly through Internet platforms, social media and mobile devices. Success in today’s work environment and everyday living is also heavily dependent on performing basic tasks on computers.

Joining North Star (https://www.digitalliteracyassessment.org/) allows us to proctor assessments for digital literacy and provide our clients with access to online training modules that offer basic skills in key areas required in today’s workplace.

Modules focus on three key areas:

Essential Computer Skills – Computer and Internet Basics, Email, Windows and Mac Operating Systems
Essential Software Skills – Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Using Technology to Accomplish Tasks – Social Media, Information Literacy (the ability to find and use relevant information), Employment Search Skills, and Your Digital Footprint (being aware of what you post online)

Participants receive certificates when proctored modules are completed.

This new offering is just one of the resources/assessments we provide to identify and/or develop your work-related skills.

The Work Place provides a wide range of services to clients at no charge via phone, video technology and email, including:

One-to-one employment coaching services are available via phone and/or Zoom meetings;
Access to employment-related workshops, including Employment Café (information on labour market trends, projects, and job leads) and Job Hub (connecting employers and job seekers);
Assistance to develop/fine tune your job search skills and documents: resume, cover letter, interview skills (including digital interviewing), online job search, LinkedIn Profile, and networking; and
Information on community resources in Grande Prairie.

Our Employment Specialist continues to work with employers to meet their immediate hiring needs and search out job opportunities for clients.

Business As Usual At The Work Place

At The Work Place, we are closely monitoring the ever-changing events related to the COVID-19 outbreak and are taking a cautious, yet sensible approach to our response at this time.

We are very grateful that we are in an area where the risk is still considered low. However, we believe it is our responsibility to reduce the risk. In addition to our regular cleaning and sanitizing routines, we have increased the amount of times that multi-touch surfaces are sanitized.

Our current services are operating as usual while incorporating enhanced health and safety expectations. If things change, information will be posted on our website and Facebook page.

We are continuously monitoring the situation, and will provide updates as new information become available.

Financial Literacy Key To Balanced Life

Getting that dream job is what everyone strives to accomplish. Learning how to manage money is also vital to enjoying a successful career and home life.

The Work Place, in partnership with the Grande Prairie Council For Lifelong Learning, is providing Transition to Employment and Job Placement Services clients the opportunity to receive a certificate for participation in a series of sessions on Financial Literacy, starting Monday, March 4 at 9:15 a.m.

Financial Literacy is having the skills to balance spending, saving, credit and debt successfully by having the confidence to make smart decisions with your money on a day-to-day basis. It also means knowing how money works and how to make it work for you instead of against you.

Instructor Shannon Carson leads the five-part series.

Assets – Session 1 – Monday, March 4

Assets – Session 2 – Wednesday, March 6

Often, we think of assets as tangible and financial resources. In the Asset portion of the series, participants explore their financial, social, human, physical and personal assets.

Budgeting – Session 1 – Friday, March 8

Budgeting – Session 2 – Monday, March 11

Participants will learn to identify needs and wants, how to track expenses, develop an income-based budget, and set realistic short- and long-term goals.

Banking – Session 1 – Wednesday, March 13

Banking – Session 2 – Friday, March 15

The focus of these sessions is building an awareness about banking options, using bank services effectively and safely, and accessing bank resources easily.

Credit – Session 1 – Monday, March 18

Credit – Session 2 – Wednesday, March 20

In these sessions, students will become more aware of the purpose, advantages and disadvantages of credit, how to use credit wisely and learn about accessing consumer credit wisely.

Consumerism – Session 1 – Friday, March 22

Consumerism – Session 2 – Monday, March 25

Participants will gain a heightened awareness of advertising and how to be a good consumer.

Job Search Requires a Multi-pronged Approach

Whether you’re unemployed or under-employed, getting that next job may be as easy as applying for the first opening you see. However, it’s more likely a full-fledged job search is required to find the right fit.

That means employing several tactics in your job search toolbox.

Staff at The Work Place in Grande Prairie can assist you with your job search tools and advise you on tactics to be most successful in your job hunt, including possible referrals to low- or no cost ways to improve your skills (see contact information below).

With the unemployment rate in Canada hitting an all-time low in late 2018, it’s more important than ever that you’re doing more than churning out resumes and hoping for the best. Applying to specific opportunities with relevant and detailed information on your resume is just a start.

While most vacancies are widely advertised, often on popular job sites, many are found in the hidden job market or are advertised in limited forums such as social media – Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter.

Many employers continue to rely on employee referrals. Have you cultivated your network within companies where you’d like to work? Have you discussed your employment situation with colleagues and contacts, in general? Professional and social gatherings are great opportunities to promote yourself.

Is your LinkedIn profile up to date, including your volunteer experience and testimonials? Are you continuing to upgrade your skills in key areas while conducting your job search?

Transition to Employment Services Information Sessions Underway

The start of a new year is an excellent time to bolster your job search skills. If you’re unemployed, check out an upcoming Transition to Employment Services information session at The Work Place in Grande Prairie as part of your plans.

Transition to Employment Services offers supports to assist unemployed individuals gain employment. Information sessions are every Tuesday and Thursday at 11 a.m., resuming Thursday, Jan. 3 at #105, 9840 97 Avenue, Grande Prairie, Alberta.

The service is focused on those who are:

Unemployed and looking to gain a competitive edge with their job search;
Lacking workplace and occupational-related skills to find their next job; and
Thinking about making a change from one occupational field to another.

Components include

Employment and job search support, access to funding for short-term training, employment supports and referrals to employers/opportunities.
